Chief Sub Editor - News Desk

Editorial · Toronto, Ontario
Department Editorial
Employment Type Employee
Minimum Experience Manager/Supervisor

We're an international media company, looking for a talented senior editor to join our highly successful international editorial team.

This is a fast-paced, high-level role scything through content mediocrity to ensure punchy, to-the-point, supremely focused, useable content across multiple products and international markets.

In this role, you will:

  • work with an international team of journalists
  • leverage your cutting-edge editing/publishing skillset to enhance the digital content we are delivering to our niche professional audiences via multiple daily e-newsletters and b2b websites
  • spice up headlines, intros and leads with wit, wordplay, intelligence and insight

This is a fast-paced, high-level role controlling the direction, focus and quality of online content on many different levels and across several different markets. The role is about understanding what our audiences want and need, and making sure that our international editorial team delivers it consistently. You’ll need to get your sleeves rolled up enhancing large numbers of stories daily but will also need to spend time giving careful feedback to writers and reporters where it is needed most. The role will involve elements of headline writing and editing, but the essence of the role lies at a higher level - considering the overall relevance and utility of content and acting for both the short and long term to fix up areas of weakness.

To succeed in this role, you will be:

  • able to apply your intellect on different levels simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • very organised, with excellent planning and project management skills
  • experienced in mentoring writers and journalists and delivering robust feedback in a tactful and structured way
  • someone with a strong tertiary academic background, polished English skills and the ability to understand the markets we cater for
  • confident and driven to raise the content bar for a growing and ambitious media company – in this role and possible future expansions of it
  • looking for a challenging, busy role

Benefits of the role:

  • Flexible remote work – work wherever it suits you best!
  • Training - E-learning support through LinkedIn learning
  • Extra vacation time –earn an extra day of paid vacation for each year that you work for us, starting at 2 years
  • Volunteer leave–one paid day per year to engage in volunteering activities
  • Rewards - Access to great employee recognition programs, including quarterly awards, vouchers and travel incentives
